Library Board Meeting Minutes
Monday, July 25 2016 @ 4:30 p.m.
Present: Jon Ross, Dianne Wanzek, Mary Christensen, Gerry Grinde, Steve Bailey, and Katy Hiltner, Ex -Officio
Excused: Julie Lofdahl and Jack Sandberg
Jon Ross called the meeting to order. The minutes from the June 27, 2016 meeting were reviewed. Motion
made to approve minutes as written by Dianne Wanzek, seconded by Steve Bailey. Minutes approved as written.
Old Business:
Lighting in Library:
New LED bulbs have been installed on the main and 2"d floor (large decorative fixtures.) Due to a small fan
attached to each bulb, the new bulbs are creating a buzzing/humming noise. Jamie Johnson with Minnesota
GreenCorps is looking into options for quieter bulbs. There have been no reported patron complaints with the
noise.
Summer Reading Program -
A total of 84 teens have signed up for the Teen Summer Reading Program — wow! The library saw a successful
Minute to Win It Program in June with 7 teens in attendance. The Children's Reading Program has over 500
participants — very successful! Upcoming Stories in the Park programs include a Minnesota Science Museum
water program on Thursday, July 28. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the county
fairgrounds.
One Book, One Community—
The committee is still in the process of selecting a book. Funding considerations for next year include pursuing a
Legacy grant to help cover programming costs.
New Business:
Budget Requests —
Pioneerland Library System issued funding request letters on July 7, 2016, to area cities and counties. This year's
request is a 2% increase over FY2016. Katy will be speaking before the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday,
Sept. 27tH
Job Posting — Library Assistant I
The library is need of a Library Assistant I. Katy will be posting the job notice internally this week and will then
create a public post (if needed). The hours available for this Library Assistant I position are 5-9 hours/week with
a Saturday rotation (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)
Coming Up: Annual Used Book Sale -
The Friends Annual Used Book Sale will be held Friday, Sept. 16th 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 17th
9 a.m.-4 p.m. This book sale will coincide with the Hutchinson Arts and Crafts Festival, which will feature the
Legacy arts program "One Another."
Fall Projects -
Katy's idea is to create a monthly newsletter and calendar featuring library news and programs. Katy also talked
with Kay Johnson at the River Song Music Festival. Kay suggested that Katy put together a few draft articles for a
possible library column in the newspaper. In addition to print materials, Katy would like to update the Library's
Web page to include an "About" page highlighting the library's history. In addition, Katy is talking with the
Friends of the Library to find out if there is interest in creating a Friends' page.
Pokemon GO -
Library Square is busy with Pokemon Go! Board members commented that the gaming has provided good
interaction for children.
Other -
Tuesday Aug. 2"d (afternoon) -Friday, Aug. 5t", Katy will be out of the office on a vacation.
All approved a motion to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 5:03 p.m.
