05-23-2016 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes May 23, 2016 Present: Julie Jensen, Harriet Sturges, Darlene Kenning, Judy Klawitter, Don Schroeder, Kay Yoch, Warren Schuft City Staff: September Jacobsen, John McRaith Absent: Curt Dahl I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00a.m. by Chairman Don Schroeder. II. Secretary's Report: The April minutes were examined. Warren made a motion to approve the minutes and Judy seconded the motion. The motion was approved. III. Treasurer's Report: Warren reported that the Giving program has totaled $4551 so far. Card sales amounted to $216 for April/May while button sales were at $25. Magnet and dish cloth sales took in another $36. Flag sales brought in $25. Kay made a motion to accept the report with a second from Darlene. The motion passed. IV. Old Business A. Tours- Julie Jensen reported that on May 14th a group headed to Milan to attend "Syttende Mai" or "Norwegian Constitution Day". It was a very unique event held in a town of about 300. Next up on the schedule is an Old Log Theater production of "Million Dollar Quartet" which has sold out. The July 19th tour to Gull Lake for a boat trip and an arboretum visit sold out the day registration began. On August 17th a tour will travel to Black Bear Lodge in Baxter for dinner and a show at the Jasper theater. The annual state fair trip will be on September 1st. October will include a mystery tour. B. Update on Programs- September reported that the upcoming Fellowship Dinner will feature old fashioned hamburger hot dish and will be held next Tuesday just after Memorial Day. June's meal will be broasted chicken. Bone Builders has moved over to a portion of the Great Room at the Event Center on Mondays when it is available. "Spotlight" was the movie for May and received very good reviews. "Touring Austria" was the second movie. It was an older video but still had a lot of interesting material. "The Lady in the Van" will be June's feature movie with "Touring New Zealand" as a follow up for our travel adventures. Intergenerational mentoring will finish this month at the Center but will still take place at one of the assisted living residences. The kayakers hit the water last week and have events scheduled for June 15th and 29th. There will be a talk today at the Center about older veterans and what services may be available for them. There will be a fashion show on June 21st for the Red Hat Society but all are welcome to attend. V. Business A. Batteries- There are a large number of nine volt batteries that have been used for one day each available at the Senior Center for free. Check at the front desk if interested. B. Spotlight on a Senior- September threw out the idea of having a senior in our community featured in the newsletter each month. Every senior has had interesting events as part of their long lives and it would be good to share those. Board members were asked to brainstorm ideas for how to make this a reality. C. Laptop Computer and Projector- September has purchased a laptop computer for the Center and is getting the software installed. A projector has also been purchased. The two items totaled around $1500 which was well under the $2000 limit laid out by the board. D. Other- No other business was brought before the board. VI. Adjournment: Warren made a motion to adjourn at 11:05 am with a second from Harriet. The motion passed. The Senior Advisory Board's next regularly scheduled meeting will be on Monday, June 27th at 10:00 a.m. John McRaith, Secretary
