01-25-2016 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes January 25, 2016 Present: Julie Jensen, Harriet Sturges, Curt Dahl, Judy Klawitter, Warren Schuft, Don Schroeder, Kay Yoch City Staff: September Jacobsen, John McRaith Absent: Darlene Kenning I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00a.m. by Chairman Don Schroeder. II. Secretary's Report: The November minutes were examined. Curt made a motion to approve the minutes and Warren seconded the motion. The motion was approved. III. Treasurer's Report: Warren presented banking figures for the month. The Giving Program has a current balance of $1781 in the account. Judy made a motion to accept the report with a second from Harriet. The motion passed. IV. Old Business A. Tours- Julie Jensen reported that the tour to the Plymouth Playhouse for a Frank Sinatra review, which included an Italian dinner, was sold out and went well. A trip to the Lind house in New Ulm had 34 registered but the tour guide was not too good. The next trip will be a February 14th excursion to Orchestra Hall to enjoy love songs by the big bands. This tour will include dining at Crystal's in Minnetonka. On March 9th we will travel to the Plymouth Playhouse for a revue featuring John Denver's music. Upcoming trips include "Grease" at the St. Cloud Paramount Theater, a Norwegian festival, an Old Log Theater production of "Million Dollar Quartet", a summer cruise on Gull Lake, a visit to Black Bear Lodge with a performance at Jasper Theater, a trip to the State Fair, and a mystery tour. B. Update on Programs- September reported that the movie for this month was "War Room" and had decent attendance. "The Longest Ride" was the bonus movie. Intergenerational mentoring is set to begin. The hope is to have the younger generations learn skills from the older generation such as knitting or crocheting. They hope to meet twice a month. The book clubs currently have openings for new members. Next month's Fellowship dinner will feature broasted chicken. Next month's feature movie will be "A Walk in the Woods" with "The Age of Adeline" as the bonus movie. V. Business A. Year in Review- September gave the board an overall view of the past year's activities and fundraisers. Over 500 people went on tours this past year and two large concerts were held. The big craft items this past year were shotgun shell creations, along with button bouquets and greeting cards. These three crafts raised over $2900 for the Senior Center. Chair cover rentals brought in another $760. These items raised significant funds while providing the participants with the opportunity to be creative and socialize. B. New Board Member- Kay Yoch has replaced Barb Peterson on the advisory board. She is beginning a three year term this month. C. Golf Net- Curt provided the board with an example of a golf practice net. It is easily contained in a small area and it would cost around $70 to purchase the items needed. Don made a motion seconded by Warren that the group go ahead with the purchase of one net. The board unanimously agreed. D. Other- Don brought up the idea of adding a second page in the PRCE brochure for the Senior Center craft projects. He also would like to see some game -type activities like Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy used to draw people to the Center. VI. Adjournment: Warren made a motion to adjourn at 11:22 am with a second from Curt. The motion passed.
