Parks, Recreation & Community Education Advisory Board
December 1, 2014
Members present were Don DeMeyer, Tim Peterson, Marlys Hoeft, John Rodeberg and Elizabeth
Hanninen-Scharn. Also present were Dolf Moon, Mary Haugen and Karen McKay.
The meeting was called to order at 5:15 pm.
A motion was made by Tim Peterson and seconded by Don DeMeyer to approve the minutes dated
September 8, 2014. The board unanimously agreed.
OLD BUSINESS
Facilities Improvement Update: The board was brought up to date with the improvements made at
the Parks garage, the Civic Arena and the baseball field. The City of Hutchinson's Facilities
Improvement committee tours the various city -owned facilities annually and makes
recommendations for updates, replacements and improvements, etc.
Burich Arena: The refrigeration systems at the ice arenas have been replaced combining the two
systems into one. The new system is more energy efficient. A reduction in electrical costs has
already occurred.
Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee: Hutchinson has received the designation as a bike -
friendly community. The committee's goal is to educate the community on bicycle safety and
bicycle trails/routes throughout the city. A sub -committee will be working on a plan for "safe
routes to school" if grant money becomes available, the plan can be ready.
NEW BUSINESS
Fall Programs: Dolf distributed the fall program report with participation numbers. The numbers
were fairly consistent with past years.
Community Education Annual Report: Dolf distributed the Community Education annual report
which outlines participation numbers by age group and service category.
Pool Update: U.S. Aquatics, a consulting firm, provided the City with a report in June 2013
regarding the city pool. Mary Haugen presented a slide show of this report showing the various
options and costs that were provided for replacement of the pool. Also included were costs to repair
and update to code the existing pool. A cost/revenue analysis was provided in the report. Dolf will
meet with the new administrator early in January.
