08-20-2013 POLMHutchinson Police Commission Minutes The Hutchinson Police Commission held a meeting on Tuesday August 20, 2013 at the Hutchinson Police Station. Present at the meeting were Chairperson Julie Jensen, Commissioner Curtis Hughes, and Chief Daniel Hatten. Commissioner Verne Meyer was absent. Call the Meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jensen at 5:00 p.m. Approval of Agenda: Chairperson Jensen asked if there were any changes to the agenda. A motion was made by Commissioner Hughes to accept the agenda as written, seconded by Chairperson Jensen. The motion carried unanimously. Approval of Minutes: Chairperson Jensen asked the Commission to approve the minutes from the July meeting. Motion was made by Commissioner Hughes, seconded by Chairperson Jensen, to approve the meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously. Staffing Issues: Chief Hatten advised the Commission that Officer Jesse Duenow began the field training program and was progressing without issue. Chief Hatten advised the Commission the background, medical physical, drug testing, and psychological have been completed on police officer candidate Phillip Mielke. The conditional offer of hire was rescinded and a formal offer of hire was given. Phillip Mielke accepted the offer and agreed to a start date of August 30, 2013. Chief Hatten advised the Commission the first round of interviews for the Security Officer position would be completed as of Wednesday August 21, 2013. The list of candidates would available later in the week for the Commission to certify. The Commission agreed to review the list individually then vote to approve or reject the list. Chief Hatten offered to contact each of the Commissioners by the end of this week to schedule a time for them to review the list. Chief Hatten advised the Commission of Officer Tyson Rainy's resignation effective August 16, 2013. Chief Hatten also requested authority to begin the hiring process for the position of police officer. Motion was made by Commissioner Hughes, seconded by Chairperson Jensen, for the Chief to begin the hiring process. Motion carried unanimously. Chief Hatten advised the Commission he would be contacting the individuals still on the current police officer eligibility list. Union Update: Chief Hatten informed the Commission that he would be meeting with representatives from the Union, the City Administrator, and the City Human Resource Director later this week to discuss shift schedules. The next scheduled negotiation is September 3, 2013. Chief Hatten assured the Commissioners he would continue to keep them informed on the progress of the union issue. Items from the Floor: Chief Hatten advised the Commission that County Fair went well. With there being no further business to discuss, a motion was made by Commissioner Hughes, seconded by Chairperson Jensen, to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried unanimously.
