I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Don Schroeder, chairperson.
IL Secretary's Report: The August minutes were examined. Harriet made a motion to
approve the minutes and Rick seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
III. Treasurer's Report: Warren reported that we recorded $199.50 in card sales this last
month. Another $21 was brought in through the sale of dish cloths. The big seller
this month was the button craft which brought in $130. The last dance lost $73 with
21 people in attendance. Harriet made a motion to accept the report with a second
from Judy. The motion passed.
IV. Old Business
A. Tours- The August 29th state fair trip was very hot but was successful. The
group stayed for the entire twelve hours even with the heat. The Plymouth
Playhouse trip for another episode of the "Church Basement Ladies" was as
popular as ever and the food was good. The October 8th trip to the Wisconsin
cranberry bogs is sold out as is the November 12th tour to the American Swedish
Institute. The Crown College Christmas concert sold tickets very rapidly also as
people were anxious to assure themselves a seat on the bus. The first trip to be
offered in the new year is a January 28th visit to the winter carnival to tour the ice
sculptures. Julie has a February trip lined up to check out a cooking skills display
along with a visit to a candy factory. On March 14th a group will head to the
Paramount Theater to see an Irish concert in honor of St. Patrick's Day which will
include a dinner at the Coyote Moon restaurant. April will probably involve a
flower show and May could bring a visit to Hudson, Wisconsin to see a musical
biography of the Righteous Brothers.
B. Update on Programs- September reported that the Senior Expo is tomorrow
which is also the date for the next Fellowship dinner. The Shadows show is this
Friday and it is around 50 tickets short of a sellout. The promoter for the
Shadows concert would like to bring "Sirens of the 60's" for a February
performance. "The Great Gatsby" was the movie of the month. Travel at a
Glance took a trip to Guatemala to see a school building project. In October we
hope to have another trip involving Terry Davis. The coupon sale for Jackpot
Junction landed at 33 tickets sold for a profit of $198 for the Center. Martin and
Delores Muetzel attended the meeting of the advisory board to discuss the senior
dances. Attendance has been dropping so the group discussed different options
for trying to build attendance. Advertising along with having food at the dances
were the two most discussed topics.
V. Business
A. Mall Community Day- The Senior Center will have a table at the Hutchinson
Mall on Saturday, October 19th. The goal is to promote organizations within the
City and help citizens to become aware of all that Hutchinson has to offer. The
Center will sell button crafts at this event.
B. Other- Don looked over old meeting minutes and came up with a list of agenda
items that had not been dealt with. Items included the new computer which has
been purchased but not installed, a sound system that still needs to be
researched, new card games with cribbage being a front runner, a coffee cart for
the Center that needs to be priced out, and a second projector has been
purchased and is ready to use. Don also mentioned that he thought we should
have an advertising sub - committee for the board. This committee would make
sure that events such as the Shadows concert get properly publicized without
duplicative efforts from volunteers. As part of this discussion Don wondered
whether we should make the senior newsletter free. The board felt that we have
already had this discussion as part of a membership option for the Center last
year. It was decided at that time that the newsletter would be the minimal fee
users would pay to participate in activities at the Center.
VI. Adjournment: Barb made a motion to adjourn at 11:50 am with a second from Harriet.
The motion passed.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 28th at 10:00 a.m.
John McRaith, Secretary
