L The meeting was called to order at 10:03 a.m. by Carrol Olson
IL Secretary's Report: The September minutes were examined. Rick made a motion to
approve the minutes and Judy seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
III. Treasurer's Report: Warren reported that in the last month we had $173 in card sales
along with a $100 from the memorial program and $50 from dish cloths. There was
also an $854 tour reimbursement. The current bank balance is $5821.41. Don made
a motion to accept the report with a second from Rick. The motion passed.
IV. Old Business
A. Tours- Julie reported that the mystery trip on October 9th was to a berry farm in
Fairhaven, Minnesota. The group was treated to a hay ride and a gourmet dinner in
addition to a tour of the farm operation. It went very well except for the very cool
weather. The November 29th tour to the history museum is sold out as is the
December trip to the Christmas pageant. Julie was excited to report that she is
arranging an April 18th trip to see "Ring of Fire" about the life and times of Johnny
Cash. This is in addition to the other tours already on tap for the new year. These
include a tour of Hutchinson and the Crow River winery in January with a stop at
Zella's for lunch, a February trip into our past called "Murder in McLeod County"
with a turkey dinner at the museum, and a March trip to St. Cloud to hear "Celtic
Tenors ". A board member shared his concern that some trips fill before a good
number of people even know about them. September assured him that each trip is
advertised at least one week in advance through the newsletter before the first day
of registration. Mystery tours and boat trips seem to fill the fastest when
registration does open.
B. Update on Programs- September reported the Fellowship Dinner for October held
steady for tickets sold even though it was scheduled on a Tuesday instead of
Monday so that is good as it will give the program more flexibility. "Travel at a
Glance" toured Norway in September and in October Terry Davis will be guiding
the group on a tour of the railway system in the western United States. The last
dance of the year was held in October and broke even. The participants feel that a
$5 fee for each dance and a free will offering for lunch is the best way to go in the
future. " Tea from India" went over well with the event totally booked. The
AARP free drivers training program for veterans is filling nicely. "Route 66" is
starting this month and will travel across America from Chicago to Los Angeles on
this scenic roadway. . The movie next month is "Mirror Mirror ". The Center will
be creating "Memory Teddy Bears" made out of materials from a relative's clothing
and given to a youngster in the family. For example a Teddy Bear could be made
out of Grandpa's shirt and given to the grandchild. The card game "Sheephead"
will be adding a 12:30p session on Thursdays.
V. Business
A. Council Meeting- The Advisory Board looked over budgets for the Senior
Center and the Event Center to try and understand the current financial situation
with these two entities sharing the same facility. The Council would like to
have the Seniors provide some of the funds to help pay the approximate cost of
$12,000 to add Fridays back into the schedule. The advisory board spent some
time discussing available options for raising funds. After much discussion,
Warren made a motion to raise an additional $4000 in funds for next year to
help offset the cost of opening the Center on Fridays. Rick seconded the motion
and it passed unanimously. The board went on record reminding the City
officials that many of Hutchinson's seniors are actively involved in volunteering
within the community and that this should be taken into consideration when
considering what seniors are providing to this community. One member also
produced an article from the Hutchinson Leader outlining how the City would
designate funds from the hospital privatization settlement to be used for
wellness activities. Members felt that the Center should definitely see some of
these funds as wellness is one of the main reasons the Senior Center exists.
B. New Board Member- Barb Peterson was introduced as the new board member
replacing Cliff Swanson who left the board for health reasons. She will finish
his term which will conclude in December of this year. Barb and Don will
decide this next month whether they wish to continue with a new three -year
term at next month's meeting.
VI. Adjournment: Judy made a motion to adjourn at 11:37am with a second from Rick.
The motion passed.
Next Meeting: Monday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m. - John McRaith, Secretary
