October 31, 2011
Present: Harriet Sturges,Cliff Swanson, Rick Reiner, Carrol Olson, Phyllis Birkholz,

I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Carrol Olson
II. Secretary’s Report: The September minutes were examined. Harriet made a motion to
approve the minutes and Rick seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
III. Treasurer’s Report: Randy reported income this past month of $195 from card sales,
with another $576 coming for china dish rentals from this past year. The current
balance is $8842.71. Rick made a motion to accept the report with a second from
Harriet. The motion passed.
IV. Old Business
A.Tours- Julie reported that the State Fair trip was really hot! She had offered some
abbreviated versions for the trip, due to the heat, but the participants wanted to stay

the full twelve hours. The October 19 mystery tour was a trip to Worthington with
stop at the Dayton house for lunch. The group then drove around Lake Okabena
th
and toured several area parks. Coming up November 10 is a trip to the Hubbell
nd
House in Mantorville and that tour is full. On December 2 a group will travel to
Crown College for a Christmas concert and there is just one opening remaining.

For fans of the Old Log Theater, January 18 will be the date that our seniors will
travel to see “Everybody Loves Opal.” Several other activities are already in the
works for the coming year.
B.Update on Programs- September reported that there was a good turnout for the
“Magnificent Mind” with 26 people in attendance. “ Called to Service in
Guatemala” was the video installment for this past month’s “Traveling at a
Glance.” This next month will involve a widescreen visit to India on November

14. Tonight is the fellowship dinner with ribs and sauerkraut being served.
The movie for October was “Conspirator” which dealt with the Lincoln
assassination. The movie went over very well. “The Warm Springs” will be shown

on November 17 and deals with the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This
month’s dance lost a little cash and will be the last one until next March. Monday

Morning Funnies will be held on November 21 at 10:30a. On October 13 the
Center held its annual birthday party for everyone and featured a soloist singing
tunes from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. It was a great time and audience would like to
have him back. The knitters are working on hats and fingerless mittens. They are
looking for new projects. A defensive driving renewal class will be offered on

November 16 and is free to veterans, their spouses, and their dependents. Also on
th
the 16 at 1:00p will a Karioke Day at the Center. The Center’s pilates instructor
had surgery and will be unavailable for a couple months. September found some
great videos that will help lead the class during her absence.
V.Business
A.Senior Center Newsletter- Discussion was held on whether persons receiving
the Senior Newsletter via e-mail should pay a subscription fee. Board members
were informed that the production of the newsletter has costs involved that
should be shared by all of its readers. Randy made a motion that e-mail
subscribers should pay a $3 fee for a yearly subscription to the newsletter. Rick
seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved.
B.Senior Center Welcoming Procedures- September is working with volunteers at
the Center to help make it more inviting to newcomers. Explanations of various
games will be printed out and participants will be encouraged to wear name tags
in an effort to help people new to the Center become familiar with regular
guests to the Center.
C.Advisory Board Openings- Randy Bullert and Phyllis Birkholz are completing
their second terms on the board this year. These openings will be publicized
through the City and the Senior Newsletter in December. The current board
will take a look at potential replacements at their regular January meeting.
VI. Adjournment: Cliff made a motion to adjourn at 11:10am with a second from Rick.
