July 25, 2011
Present: Harriet Sturges, Louise Jessen, Cliff Swanson, Rick Reiner, Carrol Olson,
Randy Bullert, Phyllis Birkholz
City Staff: September Jacobsen, John McRaith
Absent: None
I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Carrol Olson
II. Secretary’s Report: The June minutes were examined. Randy made a motion to
approve the minutes and Rick seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
III. Treasurer’s Report: Randy reported income this past month of $259 from card sales,
dish cloth sales of $42, and chair cover rentals of $850. The current balance is
$8800.20. Louise made a motion to accept the report with a second from Cliff. The
motion passed.
IV. Old Business
A.Tours- Julie reported that the Milner Heritage Vineyard tour went nicely. The
catered meal was good and participants had the opportunity to purchase wine. The
th
only downside was that it was very hot. Upcoming trips include an August 11
visit to the St. Paul hotel, which includes a tour of its gardens, and a visit to the
st
State Fair on September 1 . This fall Julie has lined up a mystery tour for October
thth
19 and a trip to the Hubbell House in Mantorville on November 10.
B.Update on Programs- “Traveling at a Glance” is going well and we just need to
find more videos to view. The computer classes were very helpful but there are so
many skill levels in the room that it is difficult to teach to everyone at the same
time. The July movie “Soul Surfer” was moved to August due to the fact that it
th
hasn’t been released on video yet. The next senior dance is slated for August 24.
The Fellowship dinner in August will feature barbecue pork riblets. “Monday
th
Morning Funnies” will be featured on the 15 of August. This entertaining feature
shows clips from old movies. September reported that she has talked with the
people who are playing “Pickle Ball” and got the details of how their program is set
up. “Pickle Ball” is an easier version of tennis which involves a smaller court, a
paddle, and a whiffle ball which slows down the speed of the game. This particular
activity is very popular in the sun belt. Red Hat Societies are looking for future
events to attend.
V.Business
A.AARP Gift Card- AARP sent a gift card as a thank you for filling out a survey.
September asked the board to consider how it might be used.
B.Senior Expo- Last year the Senior Center had a booth at the Senior Expo held at
the Event Center. The board felt this was a good idea since it targets the senior
population.
C.Netflix- One potential avenue for new videos for our “Traveling at a Glance”
program would be to become a Netflix member as they have an extensive
library of travel films.
D.Reverse Mortgages/Wills/Trusts- September would like to check into providing
a seminar on reverse mortgages and other financial matters that seniors need to
look at. She wants to make sure she can find someone that will provide
information without putting together a heavy sales pitch.
E.Change Your Brain Video- The “Change Your Brain” video was very popular
when it was shown some time ago. It may be time to offer this lifestyle seminar
again as a refresher course.
VI. Adjournment: Cliff made a motion to adjourn at 11:17am with a second from Rick.
The motion passed.
Next Meeting: Monday, July 25th at 10:00 a.m.
John McRaith, Secretary
