08-23-2010 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes August 23, 2010 Present: Harriet Sturges, Phyllis Birkholz, Louise Jessen, Cliff Swanson, Julie Jensen, Rick Reiner, Carrol Olson, Randy Bullert City Staff: September Jacobsen, John McRaith Absent: None I. The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by Carrol Olson II. SecretaryÓs Report: The July minutes were examined. Rick made a motion to approve the minutes and Randy seconded the motion. Motion was approved. III. TreasurerÓs Report: Randy reported income this past month of $237 from card sales, $10 in cassette tape sales, and a net dance loss of $59. Additional revenue of $1171.80 came from a tour reimbursement. The current balance is $6790.32. Rick made a motion to accept the report with a second from Harriet. The motion passed. IV. Old Business th A.Tours- On August 10 a tour headed to the Museum of Russian Art with a visit to ÐMoscow on the HillÑ, a Russian restaurant afterwards. Participants also got a chance see Ukranian artists at work. A tour will head to the State Fair on nd September 2 and is just about full. The Twins game scheduled for September nd 22 is sold out. Upcoming trips also include a trip to Mystic Lake in October, a thrd November 5 tour to the Brooten dinner theater, and a December 3 trip to Crown College for a Christmas concert. The Old Log Theater is on tap for an event after the first of the year. Julie discussed the possibility of going to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater for an upcoming event. Although the fee would be considerably larger than most of our other tours, the board felt that we should pursue events that would be popular with seniors even if there is additional cost involved. B. Update on Programs- The chair cover project is going well. September is considering the possibility of renting the covers for off-site events. She is also developing a form for these rentals including a deposit. On September 30th the board was planning an open house for the Senior Center. It was decided to th combine with the Senior Expo on September 28 and get a booth. This would create higher traffic while still letting people know what the Center has to offer. Since the classic movies were having less than stellar success, the Center is trying a new program called ÐTraveling at a GlanceÑ. The first one is about Italy and will include some sampling of Italian items. ÐLetters to JulietÑ will be the movie for September. The final dances for 2010 will be held in September th and October. Monday, September 27 , is the fellowship dinner. The knitters are starting up again and they have a new donation of yarn to work with. The quilters are still at work on their latest project. Wii bowling has about a dozen participants. V. New Business A.City Budget Issues- John gave an update on the City budget process. The current cuts will impact coverage of staff in both the Recreation Center and the Event Center. While nothing has been firmed up yet, it looks as though both buildings will have reduced hours beginning either in November or at the beginning of the new year. VI.
