10-20-2003 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes October 20, 2003 Present: Mary Field, Jim Hanson, Julie Jensen, John Lyman, June Lyman, Liz Tokarczyk, Lorraine Zajicek. City Staff: Kathy Hemmah, September Jacobsen. Absent: John McRaith, Bob Meyer I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chair Jim Hanson. 11. Secretary's Report: Motion to approve the September 15 minutes by June Lyman, seconded by Liz Tokarczyk. PASSED III. Treasurer's Report: Motion to approve by John Lyman, seconded by Mary Field. PASSED. Co- treasurer Lorraine Zajicek reported a $27,002.95 balance. IV. Old Business: A. Update on Programs - Kathy Hemmah reported that an acupuncturist drew a good crowd and an Indian culture presentation drew a dozen people and the speaker will return to do a cooking class. Christmas angels are being made; six are enrolled in the bridge class; and pilates was cancelled and will be rescheduled later. Though the Harvest Ball was well received, it drew only 50 attendees. The Board discussed ways to increase attendance. B. Popcorn Ball Sale - Seven women made 12 1/2 dozen popcorn balls. They were used as favors at the Harvest Ball and the 40 remaining are for sale @ 25 cents. C. Popcorn Stand - It is finished and it looks good. D. Newsletter Postage - Annual donations for the newsletter are $5300, expenses are $4704. Therefore, September Jacobsen reported, mailing can be first class. E. United Way Funding - The purpose of the funding is to provide Trailblazer tokens. Efforts will be increased to publicize their availability. F. Tours - Julie Jensen suggested that the program of tours suggested by the Tour Committee and accepted by the Senior Advisory Board was unrealistic given available staff time. Because they are comparatively simple to arrange and usually well attended, it was agreed to plan the Old Log Theater tour in November, the Christmas at Crown Chapel in December, and the Women's Expo in January, then to evaluate the plan. V. New Business: A. Fundraising Ideas - September Jacobsen and Kathy Hemmah will bring a proposal and budget to the November meeting related to the rental of decorations for events. B. Future Programs - November is National Healthy Skin Month and National Home Care Month, as well as Veterans' Day on the Ilth. Activities will relate to those happenings. The newsletter is to solicit the donation of a wheel chair for use at the Senior Center. Finally, the idea was suggested, but no action was taken, to fundraise for a defibrillator. VI.
