09-15-2003 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes September 15, 2003 Present: Mary Field, Jim Hanson, Julie Jensen, John Lyman, June Lyman, Bob Meyer, Liz Tokarczyk, Lorraine Zajicek. City Staff: Kathy Hemmah, September Jacobsen, John McRaith. Absent: 0 I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chair Jim Hanson. 11. Secretary's Report: Motion to approve the August 18 minutes by John Lyman, seconded by Bob Meyer. PASSED III. Treasurer's Report: Motion to approve by Mary Field, seconded by John Lyman. Co- treasurer Lorraine Zajicek reported a $25,916.33 balance. IV. Old Business: A. Update on Programs - Kathy Hemmah reported the upcoming visit of an experienced acupuncturist on September 24; many early sign -ups for the Harvest Ball; a Christmas angels project that is underway and requires storage in the craft room; successful Fellowship Dinners; bridge classes to be taught by Mr. and Mrs. Hafley; and pilates taught by Karen Shaw. B. Tour Committee - John McRaith reported on the September 10 meeting of the Tour Committee. The Senior Advisory Board charged the Committe as follows: 1) to recommend guidelines related to the numbers and types of tours to sponsored by the Senior Center, 2) to recommend specific tours for Board approval, 3) to explore collaboration with commercial tour operators, and 4) to develop suggestions for promoting tours. Recommendations of the Tour Committee follow: 1) That the Senior Center sponsor annual trips to the Women's Expo (January), State Fair (August), Crown College Christmas (December), Old Log Theater, Chanhassan Dinner Theater, an overnight casino (February or March), and an out of state destination (late spring or summer). 2) That every trip will be publicized with a date after which no refunds are given. 3) That as a matter of policy the Senior Center will not promote or register clients for commercial tour operators. 4) That Senior Center tours will be promoted as heavily as possible by every means available and to patrons of all ages. 5) That John McRaith and September Jacobsen are in charge of making tour arrangements. 6) That three tours are to be advertised in the October Senior Newsletter: Old Log Theater in November, Crown College Christmas in December, and Women's Expo in January. C. Mill Pond Print - Datlaf Weseloh will sponsor the print @ $125. It will be framed to match and hung in the area of the other historical prints. D. Cable Television and Internet Charges - A $24.95 cable charge and a $19.95 internet charge are to be paid monthly by the Senior Advisory Board. E. Coffee Cart - Plans were abandoned to seek sponsors for the coffee cart. V. New Business: A. Popcorn Balls - Arnold Rotzien's popcorn ball recipe and molds are available for fundraising purposes. Help will be needed to make the treats, which will likely debut as table decorations at the Haravest Ball. B. United Nations Week - On October 8 at 10:00, Chitra, an employee of the City's finance department, will share cultural information and food from her native India. C. Exterior Signage - At a cost of $90, the City will purchase a %" to be installed on the west wall of the Events Center ( "Events Center & Senior Center ") in lieu of using a line to divide the two. The 50% charge to the Senior Advisory Board for installing "Senior Center" was $175. D. Magazine Donation - Rexall Family Drug annually sponsors nine magazine subscriptions for the Senior Center lobby area. The donor is to be thanked, plus receive a small gift such as "treats in a jar." E. Craft Room Shelving - To be paid for with proceeds from the Christmas Angels project. F. Holiday Party - Proposed for the afternoon of December 16 or 17. VI.
