07-21-2003 SAMSenior Advisory Board Minutes July 21, 2003 Present: Jim Hanson, Julie Jensen, Jahn Lyman, June Lyman, Bob Meyer, Lorraine Zajicek. City Staff: Kathy flemmah, September Jacobsen, John McRaith Absent: Mary Field, Liz Tokarczyk I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chair Jim Hanson. , 11. Secretary's Report: Motion to approve the June 10 minutes by Lorraine Zajicek, seconded by June Lyman. PASSED. III. Treasurer's Report: Motion to approve by Bob Meyer, seconded by John Lyman. PASSED. IV. Old Business: A. Program Update: Kathy Hemmah reported that the "Christmas Angels have begun making ornaments, that a lucky greeting card purchaser will win a gift basket, that card sales are going well, and that movie attendance is strong. B. Historic Photo Project: Several items of business pertained to the photo project. First, an event was proposed in which seniors would be invited to talk about each photo in the gallery, followed by refreshments. This would allow, not only for enjoyable reminiscing, but might help us to gather additional historical information for the captions appearing below each picture. Second, it was reported that all the photos have now found sponsors. Third, a Les Kouba print (for framing) and the 1901 print (for reframing) have been turned over to Marlys Woods. Fourth, if a historical photograph is submitted as a possible addition to the gallery, staff are to accept it for consideration by the Senior Advisory Board. If the SAB chooses to add it to the gallery, the owner will be asked to beat- the expense of enlargement, framing, and captioning. C. Craft Room Cabinets: Joe will work on a design when his schedule permits. D. Building Sign: We can expect installation by the City in late August or September. The City will assume no costs of installation by an outside contractor. John Lyman asked September Jacobsen to research costs of installation. E. Wood Carving Class /Demonstration: Bob Meyer found no volunteer instructors for a wood carving class. A carver is to be solicited through the newsletter. The general issue is an imbalance between Senior Center offerings that appeal to men vs. women. John McRaith presented the possibility of a community service project for hen. F. Tour C01a1.1"Agq: John McRaith suggested that the immediate task is to identify five willing individuals. 'fo date: Delores Lorentzen and Julie Jensen have expressed interest. An early task of the Committee will be to clarify the terms of the relationship between the Senior Center and commercial tour operators Bolt and R & J. V. New Business: A. Bridg'es(1as,; The newsletter will be used to solicit a teacher. B. Telecommunications Charges: A monthly statement of,$35(�is received at the Events Center from the Hutchinson Telephone Company. Confusion surrounds the history of services requested, service agreements, and Senior Center vs. City obligations for payment. Staff is to make available at the August-meeting an itemized statement (description of service and cost of internet access, cable, and telephone), along with any records available from the City regarding payment agreements. The Senior Advisory Board will then review each service and make a determination of need. C. wing: Board members met Evelyn McGrand who works three full days per week. Her 20 -hour per week salary is paid by the Federal "Experience Works" program. D. United Way: For the purpose of aiding the mobility of senior citizens, the United Way has allocated $2500 for Trailblazer tokens and other forms of senior transportation. The availability of five tokens per week to be used for social purposes (senior dining or Events Center activities vs. doctors' appointments or grocery shopping) will be advertised in the newsletter. E. Monthly Movie: Hereafter, movie announcements in the newsletter will carry the tag line: "Sponsored by the Senior Advisory Board." The Board will pay the movie rental fee, popcorn is free, and a small profit on 50 cent sodas will go to the Board. Movie rental fees for the next several months were donated by John Lyman.
