Old Business
Photos in the Library: Nothing in city code to prohibit. Photographer can only take photos of person
requesting pictures.
Program Report of Author Event with Robin Kashuba:
31 people of all ages attended. It was a free program and Robin brought her two dogs.
Summer Reading Program Updates: Children sign up of 506 has beat all-time SRP record. Typically
sign up is 480 to 490. Library’s goal was in paper which may have helped with sign up. Programs in the
park have drawn great crowds. A total of 200 plus people came to the Animal Talks program. In
addition, over 100 people came to the Hutchinson High School Robotics Club program (held in the
children’s area due to the rain). Students read picture books and demonstrated their robot. To date,
33 adult bookmarks have been handed out for the Adult Summer Reading Program.
PLS Strategic Plan (Head Librarian monthly report):
Highlighted Goal Area = Teens
A. Provide safe, comfortable spaces for teens to study, read, and meet.
B. Provide homework support and informational interactions to encourage intellectual development.
New Business
Teen Summer Reading Program - Rachelle Golde, Teen Services Librarian
Teen participation has grown since Rachelle started. She has started a teen advisory group. As part of
a YALSA Future Ready with Libraries Grant, Rachelle will be attending a conference in Salt Lake City to
further her education with young adult programming. She will also be part of a cohort during the year
and will be meeting with local partners to collaborate on programs for college and career readiness for
tweens/teens.
To date, 43 teens have signed up for the Summer Reading Program. When they sign up, teens are
asked to fill out a survey with their reading interests. Like last year, they will be given reading logs.
There will be four prize drawings for those who turn in their logs. The Teen Advisory Board helped pick
out this summer’s prizes.
Coding Club had a great turn out. Rachelle plans to keep it going through fall, but as a one-hour
program instead of a two-hour program.
Makerspace Club continues and has grown.
The Teen Advisory Board continues and Rachelle is working to help teens with everyday leadership.
The teen bookmark contest is available again this summer. In October, the winner’s bookmark will be
printed as part of Teen Read Week.
Minnesota author Candace Simar will be teaching a creative writing class at the Charter School and
then will come to speak at the library. This is another community partnership.
Possible book club? Steve would like teens to have the opportunity to talk about the books they read.
Maybe do a theme book club like the nonfiction adult book club does. Maybe a teen volunteered run
program.
Meeting Room Policy: Wondered if there is an age restriction on using the room. Katy is going to
confirm policy.
