Roger Vacek called the meeting to order. The minutes from the September 22, 2014 meeting were
reviewed. Motioned to approve by Dianne Wanzek, seconded by Jon Ross, motion passed.
PLS Update:
Update by Roger Vacek of PLS Executive Committee and General Board Meeting, October 16, 2014
• Wage Survey - PioneerLand libraries on low end. Random survey was sent to some of the
employees to help with the current pay scale. Librarian wages same across the board for pay
grade. If librarian oversee many libraries, their wages maybe higher. New pay scale was
recommended by consultant based on responsibility, education and experience. New pay scale
was passed by board. Impact to PioneerLand System is $66,000. Starts January 1, 2015. Were
happy that the impact could be managed within PioneerLand.
• An increase of 3% for the budget was asked for from cities and counties, most of the cities and
counties responded favorably.
Old Business:
McLeod County Board and Hutchinson City Council 2015 budget requests
• McLeod County has put the 3% in their budget, but it still needs final approval
• 3% is looking good for the City of Hutchinson
Senior Expo, September 23rd
• Good event attended by 180 people.
• Some of the attendees came into the library the next day to get library cards. At this time, there is no
remote access to issue cards outside of the library.
October Teen Read Week, October 12-18
• Kris Jones runs the Teen Program
• There was a bookmark contest. Three teens entered. Entries were voted on and Sydney Hlavka entry was
the winner. Winning bookmark is on display at the front desk. Sydney received a gift card to JoAnn
Fabric.
• There will be a teen writing contest - Dare to Dream
• Kris wrote grant to SAMMIE for teen program. Received $300. $100 went to each of the following: Teen
Tech Week, Summer Reading and Teen Read Week.
• There are six teens in the book club. They come regularly.
• There is more traffic checking out books and library is getting more teen books in.
MLA Conference, October 8th and 9th
• Pam said it was a great conference and worth every minute.
• She went to workshops on e -readers. Staff will have to be restructured to help people coming to the
library to set up their e -readers. The plan is to have staff Nook, IPad & Kindles in 2015 to assist with
patron questions and training.
• Also a Conflict Resolution Workshop. Excellent class. Instructor used Captain Sully's 90 second decision
to inspire them to tackle issues.
• Another workshop was Fiction Blast where books were thematically grouped.
• Keynote speaker was "Strongest Librarian in the World". Speaker has overcome Tourette Syndrom. Great
speaker and very inspirational. You can go to the Pioneerl-and website to see him.
• Three Friends of the Library also went, Mary Henke, Julie Jensen & Jeanne Langan. There were sessions
for Friends of Libraries.
Graduate Students and PLS Studies
• Pam has worked with three students this year.
• Liz Marcus currently works at the library and helped with tech hour. Liz will be done in December.
• With the cooperation of PLS, another person is comparing the correlation of less print circulation since
the start of e -books in June 2011.
• Another is working on her Media Technology two year degree. She wrote a proposal on how to handle
handheld devises. Texting instead of email for notification of books and holds.
New Business:
MN Historical Society Paper Craft Workshop, November 10, 2014 6:00 p.m.
• Paper crafting is an everyman craft. It is a free two hour workshop. 10 people have signed up. Can take
up to 20 students. Also doing workshop in Glencoe so we get a discount. Legacy grant pays for class.
Staff to take care of set-up.
Structured Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grant Request
• Pam wrote a grant to purchase new microfilm reader/printer/scanner. There is a pot of money for getting
a microfilm reader. Cost is $9,385. City has pledged $2,000. By the City pledging, gives us points in the
grant system.
• Pam said that the grant is in internal review at this time.
• The microfilm reader is smaller and would be put by computer #9. Staff will be trained to use the reader.
