Present: Roger Vacek, Jon Ross, Steve Bailey, Dianne Wanzek, Stacey Nass, Mary Christensen, Julie
Lofdahl and Pam Dille, Ex -Officio
Roger Vacek called the meeting to order. The minutes from the August 25, 2014 meeting were
reviewed. Motioned to approve by Steve Bailey, seconded by Stacey Nass, motion passed.
PLS Update:
Update by Roger Vacek of PLS Executive Board Meeting, September 18, 2014
• The new library in Cosmos to be completed in the fall of 2015. The library will be on the west side of Main
Street. The new building will house the library, city business office, meeting room and a fitness center.
• Wireless update - Hutchinson Library was updated in July. There are still two libraries waiting for update.
The contractor is still working on this and will have penalty for delay. Board asked if the work computers
are designated or a part of the public computers. Pam to double check on this and update us next month.
Old Business:
2014 Summer Reading Program Children and Teen Report by Sherry Lund, Children's Librarian
• 432 registered for program / 147 pre-school age and 285 school age
• 184 completed the program by meeting their goal for 9 weeks / 63 pre-school age and 121 school age
• 4 teenagers registered -turned in 15 logs
• 1126 kids came for the 9 weeks of Stories in the Park
• 709 kids entered contests at Sherry's desk - 698 kids found puppet Sherry would hide around the Library
• Stories in the Park were lots of fun. Partnered with 4H for Animal Talks and Zoo Mobile and with the DNR
for Smokey the Bear. There were programs by the Animal Shelter and the Dairy Princesses. The final
program was the Schiffelly Puppet Show which was sponsored by The Friends of the Library
• You can go to the Library website and click on Children Services to see pictures of the programs
• $800 - $900 was spent for prizes. Money came from a 3M grant. This is the last year of that grant. New
sponsor(s) will need to be found. Talked about how donors can contribute. If the Board finds donors,
have them make check to City of Hutchinson or Hutchinson Library and drop check off at the Library.
• There were some in-house printing costs to the Library.
Ralph Bergstrom picture final restoration
• Picture is back and looks good. Bob Wilde brought back the picture and apologized for the delay.
McLeod County Board and Hutchinson City Council 2015 budget requests
• At this time, PioneerLand and Pam have not heard from the City or the County on the budget request
of 3%
• Pam had made a presentation with a chart graphic that showed that the Hutchinson Library runs
efficiently but could use more books for our circulation numbers. Funds requested would be used to
purchase more books.
• Pam received a wonderful proposal from a grad student to look at how the e -reader circulation in the
Hutchinson Library affects the general circulation. Since the Pioneerland system cannot pullout just the
Hutchinson e -reader circulation, Pam forwarded the proposal to Pioneerland to see if this proposal could
be done across the Pioneerland system
2015 Technology (computers) upgrade update
• Upgrade for desktop replacement computers has been pushed back to 2016
• Libraries are being asked to provide more portable units, such as laptops, eReaders, etc. in 2015 to the
public.
• Pam said they are regrouping to figure out what to do. Pam would like to visit some other libraries to see
what they do. Maybe have a laptop for staff to do some testing on how it would work to use around the
library. Talk of how to secure the laptop so people do not walk away with it or drop it and break it.
• Another thought is to have e -readers on site to be able to train people on them
Outdoor book sale final report
• Friday was rained out at 3:30 - Saturday was a great day
• City employees, and board members, Roger Vacek and Jon Ross helped carry out the 200+ boxes of books
• $2,363.75 was the amount of sales. This includes a $250 Thrivent Matching Grant
• Students from St. John's Lutheran Church took the unsold books, took the covers off, and recycled the
pages for their paper drive
• Pam reported that the amount of indoor book and magazine sales for the year is around $6,400
• Board thought it would be a good idea for Pam to write an article for the paper on what people can do for
our library - donate funds towards Summer Reading program, donate books for the library and/or book
sales, etc.
New Business:
October Teen Read Week is Oct. 12 - 18
Hutchinson Teen Librarian, Kris Jones, is making plans. She is getting program idea information from
YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association)
Also Kris will be presenting at MLA Annual Convention of which she chairs the Readers' Advisory Round
Table Committee.
• Kris also updates the library Facebook and Twitter pages
MLA Annual Convention
Convention is in Mankato on October 8t" & 9t" - great opportunity to network. It is mainly for public and
academic librarians. Pam received a grant through SAMMIE to pay for her to attend the event.
Pam hopes to check out vendors to see what they have for upgrading the computers and talk to other
librarians on how they handle their computers and portable devices
Senior Expo
Pam will be attending the Senior Expo at the Hutchinson Event Center tomorrow from 8:00 to 1:00 and will be
promoting books on tape and large print books. The library will contribute magnets as paid for by Library Friends
for gift bags that the attendees will receive.

With the generous anonymous donation of the New York Times, Pam uses the Sunday Book Review portion to
help with choosing new books to purchase for the library. Board asked how many people read the NY Times.
Pam did not have that answer, but said one of the staff does try to track what periodicals people are reading
through observation. Roger commented on how great the paper was and others thought they should check it out.
