Absent: None
I. The meeting was called to order at 10:03 a.m. by chairman Jim Hansen
II. Secretary's Report: The March 15th minutes were examined. Liz Tokarczyk made the
motion to approve with a second by June Lyman. Motion approved.
III. Treasurer's Report: The current balance is $28,448.09 with a deposit of$187.87
for cards and tax preparation donations in March. John Lyman made the motion to
accept the report with a second by Julie Jensen. Motion approved.
IV. Old Business
A. Update on Programs- 94 people attended the Red Hat Society function last
week. The knitting club will start this week. Brochure information on the
Senior Center was very noticeable this spring. The Spring sampling party with
Rich Pohlmeier displaying various foods will be held on April 28th. Pilates is
still popular on Thursdays. They use a punch card system for each class so that
participants only pay for the classes they attend. Some participants have noted
an improvement in their health as a result of participating. The Volunteer
Appreciation dinner is planned for April 29th at 11 :00 am. The menu will be
grilled chicken sandwiches and soup. The Senior Advisory Board sponsors this
dinner. Movie day is the third Thursday and Friday of the month. This next
month is the movie "Miracle" about the U.S. Olympic hockey team.
Attendance is averaging 20-40 people per screening.
B. Tour Committee- Old Log Theater and Chanhassen trips are doing well.
Festival of Nations has only 13 so Julie suggested calling Holt Tours and having
our registrants join them. Holt is running a trip on the same day. The Lake
Minnetonka Cruise should be in the next newsletter. The weather is a concern
in planning this trip. Discussion ensued on the possibilities for overnight or
longer trips. The tough part of these endeavors is that Holt and other tour
companies already offer these trips.
C. Response to Donations- Liz checked into a pool table in St. Cloud. A
remodeled table will cost about $1200 delivered and set up. John Lyman made
a motion, seconded by June that September and Liz check out the table and, if
acceptable, purchase it. The motion was approved.
D. Advisory Board Vacancies- The paperwork has been sent to City Center to
approve having John Lyman replace Gayle Nelson, June Lyman replace Mary
Field, and Phylis Birkholtz replace Bob Meyer. The Lymans will be in the third
year of their first terms in 2004. Phylis will be in the first year of her first term.
V. New Business
A. Computer Software- Julie made a motion, seconded by Liz, that September look
into computer word processing software so that the computers at the Senior
Center will have the appropriate software for providing classes and seminars.
The computers currently are internet accessible but have no software. The
motion was approved.
B. Pool V olunteers-Signup sheets will be available at the volunteer luncheon for
the upcoming summer pool concessions season. September will contact Marv
Haugen about a training session for the volunteers.
C. Senior Essay Contest- In the past, sixth graders have had an essay contest on
the topic of their grandparent or a senior citizen that they know well. The
sponsoring organization is not funding the contest this year so September was
wondering if the Advisory Board would like to continue the program. A $25
cash prize is awarded for the best boy's and girl's essay. John Lyman made a
motion to continue the contest and Lorraine seconded the motion. The motion
passed.
D. Art Supplies for the Senior Expo- The board has sponsored the art supplies for
a senior art project in conjunction with the Senior Expo in the fall of each year.
The board voted to continue this tradition after a motion by Julie and a second
by Liz.
VI. Adjournment: John made the motion to adjourn at 11 :28am and Liz seconded. The
motion passed.
Next Meeting: Monday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m.
John McRaith, Secretary
