Senior Advisory Board Minutes
January 26,2004
Present: Jim Hanson, John Lyman, Liz Tokarczyk, Lorraine Zajicek. City Staff:
September Jacobsen, John McRaith.
Absent: Kathy Hemmah, June Lyman
I. The meeting was called to order at 10:08 a.m. by Chair Jim Hanson
II. Secretary's Report: Motion to approve the December 15 minutes by Liz Tokarczyk
seconded by Lorraine Zajicek. Approved.
III. Treasurer's Report: Expenses for the previous month included $444 for two months
worth of postage, $46.90 for cable and internet service, and $62.31 for craft
and card materials. Revenues included $11.93 in interest and $359.07 for card
sales and stamp reimbursement. Current balance- $27,943.96. Motion to
approve by Lorraine Zajicek seconded by John Lyman. Approved.
IV. Old Business
A. Update on Programs- A birding club will be offered at the library beginning in
March and running through October. Plans are proceeding for a Mardi Gras
dance. The 55 Alive defensive driving classes remain popular with seniors.
The Red Hat Society has added a seventh group- The Flaming Dames.
B. Tour Committee- In Julie Jensen's absence September gave an update on tour
planning. Board members received a calendar of possible tours for the
upcoming year. Julie had polled 45 participants to the Women's Expo in
January on possible future tours. Amongst the most popular choices were:
The Old Log Theater, Festival of Nations, Minnesota Zephyr train ride, and a
Lake Minnetonka cruise. The Board expressed appreciation for Julie's efforts
and felt that the program was headed in a positive direction.
C. Response to Donations- The January newsletter included a request for donations
of various items that could be used at the Senior Center. While no donations
were offered, discussion ensued about the possible purchase of a pool table.
The board felt that if a table in good shape could be found in the $500-$1000
price range, senior funds could be used to help make the purchase.
VI. New Business
A. Postage- The Senior Center newsletter is losing money at the current time. To
remedy this would require an increase in the charge for the newsletter or a
decrease in the cost of producing the newsletter. It was decided that the best
option at this time would be to go to bulk postage, which will save
approximately $1000 a year. If this is found to be unsatisfactory, other
options will be explored.
B. New Members- Replacements are needed for Bob Meyer and Mary Field on the
advisory board. Current members of the board should check with their fellow
seniors and come up with names of interested candidates. The newsletter
should also make a request for interested persons to contact September.
VI. Adjourn: Moved by John Lyman, seconded by Lorraine Zajicek. Approved.
Next Meeting: Monday, February 23 at 10:00 a.m.
John McRaith, Secretary
Secretary's Note: Mary Field passed away this past month. She was an active member
of the board and a wonderful person to work with. She will be greatly missed.
