Summery of Proiects in 2004
The Board reviewed the summer projects Schnobrich presented starting with
the 2004 Energy Tree plantings
- 365 Trees were planted this year with 72 homes applying for trees
with 65 homes receiving trees. 144 trees were planted on private
property and the rest were planted on public blvd and parking lot
areas.
The MnDOT Roadside Landscape Partnership
163 trees were planted on Hwy 15 south, south of Century Ave with
Oaks, Hackberry and Red Cedar being the species of choice planted.
Schnobrich stated that a review of the project was made with the
local MnDOT reps and the MnDOT Forester, as a few questions were
needed to be answered prior to the project being approved by the
state. Local maintenance staff was questioning a few of the tree
locations. A consensus was achieved when a living snow fence was
installed with the cooperation of the local farmer. In addition 100 feet
of plastic fencing was added to the standing corn snow buffer to help
control blowing snow. This will all be reviewed this winter in hopes
that the stand of Red Cedar can remain standing as part of the
Roadside Landscape Partnership Grant.
The Miller Woods Oak Savannah Restoration Project
- A letter from John Miller was sent to City Hall November 9, 2004
describing John Millers discontent with the actions taken by the City
in regards to Miller Woods over the last 30 years. He listed a lack of
financial commitment and the lack of enforcement of violators who
utilize the park for their personnel property. John Miller also
requested that the city fence in the park in order to deter further miss
use of the park. The Tree Board discussed the matter and agreed that
stricter enforcement of the park rules needs to be implemented.
Schnobrich spoke of the work that has taken place in the park over
the last 30 years, all in an effort to restore the remnant oak / prairie
park land.
Rose Jergens agreed that tougher enforcement is needed and that 15
days was a good length of time to allow people to remove all
personnel property from the park
Schnobrich highlighted the 2004 Energy Tree Report given to the Utility
Commission on November 29th. He stated that he did not get a chance to
present the report to all the commissioners and that a decision was not
reached as to funding for the 2005 Energy Tree Planting Program.
Schnobrich stated he would be in contact with Utilities in a week or so to see
what decision was reached as to the future funding.
